Modeling of Steel Reinforcement Corrosion in Reinforced Concrete

Bridges, buildings, and many other elements of modern infrastructure are made of reinforced concrete (RC). Although design of RC structures for applied loads is governed by rigorous design rules embodied by design codes and standards, their design for long-term performance and durability is far less rigorous. In practice,   few structures fail due to overload while exposure of concrete structures to severe chemical and environmental conditions leads to their premature deterioration. Hence, it is necessary to develop rigorous models for predicting the long-term performance and safety of RC structures under such exposure conditions. In this presentation one such model is presented for predicting steel reinforcement corrosion and the resulting damage caused by corrosion.  The presentation also highlights a modern repair and retrofit technique for damaged and deficient RC structures utilizing fibre reinforced polymers.  The repair techniques will be discussed based on the provisions of the CSA Standard S806.

Speaker:  Dr. A. Ghani Razaqpur, Ph.D., P.Eng., FCSCE, FEIC, FCAE – Professor of Civil Engineering,  McMaster University and  chair of CSA Standard S806-12: Design and Construction of Building Components with Fibre Reinforced Polymers

Professor Razaqpur has been teaching, researching and consulting in the field of structural engineering, with emphasis on reinforced and prestressed concrete structures, for the past 33 years. He has published over 200 scholarly articles on various aspects of concrete behavior and design and has served as specialist consultant on numerous projects for the federal, provincial and municipal governments as well as private industry in Canada and US. He is the recipient of several awards, including the CSA Award of Merit, the CSCE A.B. Sanderson Award and the CSCE Leipholz Medal for his contributions to the advancement of structural engineering and mechanics.
