Bridge Building Challenge 2018
March 24, 2018 @ 8:00 am - 2:00 pm
$15Event Navigation
The annual Bridge Building Challenge organized by the Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) Mississauga Chapter will be held on Saturday, March 24th 2018. Join the challenge to test your design, construction, and creative skills against fellow students from all over the city.
Bridge building kits will be available for pickup from the main office of Tomken Road Middle School from March 2nd on wards.
This challenge is open to students currently enrolled in grade 6, grade 7 or grade 8, at a school located in Mississauga.
Students are encouraged to build bridges in teams of up to two (2) students.
All teams that register will be provided with a kit containing 200 popsicle sticks, white school glue, and a set of challenge rules. The challenge is to research and create a design for a bridge, and then build a bridge from the supplied bridge building kit. On the day of the event, teams will bring their assembled bridge and give a short presentation about it in front of a panel of judges who are all Engineers. The bridge will then be tested on a bridge buster, which records the load that the bridge is supporting at the moment it breaks.
However, the strength of the bridge is only one component of the total score. Judges will also evaluate other aspects of the bridge including design technique, construction quality, creativity, and aesthetics.
The best way to finalize your design is to build a prototype. Set aside the supplied bridge building kit, buy similar supplies from an arts and crafts store, and try out different designs. Once you have the best design and have mastered how to construct it, build your final bridge using the supplied bridge building kit. Remember to build your final bridge well enough in advance of the event to allow the glue to dry.
Prizes will be awarded.
