December 5, 2019 @ 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Event Navigation
PEO Mississauga Chapter, Women in Engineering and Innovation Committees, are very happy to invite Mr. Paul Acchione, retired “Manager – Engineering Services” OPG and past president of OSPE to give a talk on the new concepts of SMR and its advantages.
“SMRs are a new innovative technology spanning a range of reactor sizes from a few MW to a few hundred MW. The technology involves new coolant and fuel designs that have a number of characteristics that make them more suitable for lower cost clean civilian energy production. Some of the new designs are passively safe (walk-away safe), can be deployed closer to population centres to provide both electricity and heat, use fuel more effectively that produces up to 100x less radioactive waste that is up to 1000x less long-lasting. SMRs in combination with renewable energy sources should make decarbonization of our energy systems possible and affordable by mid-century.
