Bridge Building Challenge – 2017
The annual Bridge Building Challenge operated by the Mississauga Chapter of Professional Engineers Ontario will be held on Saturday, March 25th 2017. All teams that register will be provided with a kit of 200 popsicle sticks, white school glue, and a set of rules. The challenge will be to research and create a design for a bridge and then build it from the supplied kit of popsicle sticks. On the day of the event, teams will bring their assembled bridge and give a short presentation about it in front of a panel of judges who are all Engineers. Their bridge will then be tested on a bridge buster and it will record the load that the bridge is supporting at the moment it breaks. However, the strength of the bridge is only one component in the total score, since other aspects about the bridge including design technique, construction quality, creativity and even aesthetics will be evaluated by the judges.
Prizes will be awarded.
The best way to finalize your design is to build a prototype.
Set aside the supplied bridge kit, buy popsicle sticks from an arts and crafts store and try out different designs. Once you have the best design and have mastered how to construct it, build your final bridge using the supplied bridge kit. Remember to build your bridge well enough in advance to allow the glue to dry.
Bridge Building Challenge is open to grade 6, grade 7 and 8 students.
Spaces are limited to only 100 teams! Teams can have up to two (2) students.
Last day to register is Sunday March 12, 2017.
Please make sure you register before picking up a bridge building kit.
- Each participant must be accompanied by Parent/Guardian on the day of the event.
