Event Summary:

The Mississauga Chapter Board of Executives presents a technical seminar: Corrosion Protection to Extend the life of Concrete Structures.

Corrosion of steel reinforcement occurs in reinforced concrete structures and results in significant cost of repairs if left unattended. In this seminar, an overview of the corrosion process is presented. Corrosion protection of existing concrete structures as well as corrosion design and mitigation in new structures will be discussed.

This presentation will include many corrosion mitigation technologies highlighted in the Bridge Preservation Guidelines by American Federal Highway Administration, Guide for Electrochemical Techniques to Mitigate the Corrosion of Steel in Reinforced Concrete Structures by ICRI (International Concrete Repair Institute) and will cover the following topics;

Reinforced concrete corrosion evaluation and mitigation:

  1. Corrosion Basics & Investigation – Understanding the primary causes and the corrosion process and corrosion assessment.
  2. Recent development of corrosion mitigation guidelines and codes such as Bridge Preservation Guide by US FHWA and Installation of Embedded Galvanic Anodes by ACI RAP Bulletin 8, and ICRI.
  3. Demonstration of patch-accelerated corrosion, half-cell corrosion measurement and galvanic protection
  4. Repair Alternatives-localized protection or distributed / global systems depending on age and condition of structure and expected service life.
  5. Corrosion Mitigation Systems and technologies available.
  6. Case Studies
