Mathletics Challenge 2013 – Olive Grove School


Sunday, March 24th, 2013, 9:00am – 11:00am for Senior Level and 11:00am to 2:00pm for Junior Level

Registration: Closed  

  • Registration will be on first come first served basis. Approximately 60 students will be registered for each level; rest will be on the waiting list.
  • There is no limit on number of students from each school.
  • All students shall register here and provide all required information.
  • Normally a student can participate in on elevel of challenge only; however if any student in Grade 6 and below wants to participate in both levels, students shall make registration for both levels and indicate the preference challenge level.
Information:

Education committee is organizing the second Mathletics Challenge (2013) at Olive Grove School (OGS). Mathletics is a unique opportunity that helps students become familiar with engineering tasks while solving mathematical equations. The goal of this competition is to create a passion in the application of mathematics in solving day-to-day, scientific, and engineering problems.

Questions are based on Ontario curriculum by grade.

Challenge Objective:
  • To create a passion in the application of mathematics in solving day-to-day scientific and engineering problems.
  • To create an interest in active thinking and problem solving.
  • To introduce different facets of mathematics.
  • To provide hands on experience in engineering problem solving.

Challenge Level:
  • Senior Level: To all student in Grade 7 and 8.
  • Junior Level: To all student in Grade 6.

Eligibility, Testing Standard and Prizes:
  • All full time students registered in Ontario Curriculum Schools are eligible. Students attend the Mathletics challenge on November 2012 are not eligible to participate.
  • Questions are designed to reflect the Ontario Curriculum level of Grade 6 (Junior Level), Grade 7 and 8 (Senior level).
  • Questions are in application of mathematics to science and engineering.
  • Some questions will be based on topics introduced during the challenge.
  • First, second, and third prize will be awarded for students in each level.
  • All participants will be given certificate of participation.
  • Prizes will not be awarded to winners who are not present at the time of announcement of the results.

Challenge Format:

Both senior and junior level challenge are INDIVIDUAL EVENTS, and each level will have two rounds.

  • All participants are required to participate in both rounds.
  • Speed and accuracy would be tested.
  • Each participant will be provided with a well identified clicker.
  • Each clicker will have the provision to provide answers by pushing the selected button and then press the SEND button.
  • All students will answer the questions projected on the screen using the clicker provided. Computer will record the response and compile the marks.
  • Students will be allowed to use all aids to solve mathematical problems like calculators, paper, pens, books etc. Students are expected to have their own calculator for use during the challenge.
  • Cell phone and any other communication device will not be permitted.
  • Late comers will not be allowed.

Scoring:
  • Marks will be compounded from each challenge round where applicable.
  • No marks will be awarded for unanswered questions.
  • For some questions a bonus mark will be awarded to the student who provides the correct answer first.
  • Marks will not be deducted for wrong answers.

General Rules and Information:
  • Contest is conducted in English.
  • A panel of adjudicators will be resolve all disputes. Their decision will be final and binding.
  • Teachers, parents, guardians, and their guests are welcome to attend the event and cheer the participants. The challenge will be held in the gym. The guests will be able to witness the whole event and see the participants in action.
  • Teachers, parents, guardians, and their guests shall not interfere or assist the participants.
  • Space is limited for teachers, parents, guardians, and their guests. It will be on first come first served basis.
  • No food and drinks will be permitted during the challenge.
  • Any student without proper registration will not be permitted to participate in the challenge.
