PEO Mississauga Seminar, “Clean Transportation, Clean City: Toward a Net-Zero Future” hosted by the Environment, Transportation & Energy Committee Committee

On May 7, 2024, PEO Mississauga Chapter’s Environmental, Transportation and Energy Committee hosted a three-part seminar titled “Clean Transportation, Clean City: Toward a Net-Zero Future”, at the South Common Community Centre. 

With a primary focus on EV charging, battery storage and the City of Mississauga’s Net-Zero plan, the event addressed the goals and challenges of the clean transportation industry.

The event featured presentations by the following distinguished speakers:

First Speaker: Stephen Bacchus MBA, PMP, B.Eng. Manager, Transit Fleet Engineering & Asset Management, City of Mississauga (MiWay).

✅ MiWay’s Road to Decarbonization & Fleet Planning 
✅ Technical Dive Into Zero-Emission Bus Technologies 
✅ Risks, Challenges, and Policy Considerations for the Future 
 
Second Speaker: Mark Marmer Owner, Signature Electric.
✅ Dynamic load management: is it necessary? 
✅ Different approaches for different use cases (MURB vs Fleet vs Public) 
✅ Is 100% EV-ready a sensible approach? 
✅ The future of EV Charging – Batteries & Peak Shaving 
 
Third Speaker: Mike Voll Sector Leader, Smart Technologies, Stantec Consulting Ltd.
✅ Economic and regulatory drivers for fleet electrification 
✅ Impacts of heavy-duty vehicle and vessel charging 
✅ Utilizing Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESSs) to help support constrained grids 
✅ Where a BESS can work and where it might not, and why factor Non-Wire-Solutions like BESS’s into electricity grid planning.

 


An open Q&A session was held at the end of the presentation, moderated by Mouwafak Ayoub, P.Eng. with the three speakers.

Furthermore, thanks to Anwar Somani, General Manager, Mercedes-Benz Mississauga Van Center and his team, Ali Jessa and Melvin Naidu, for their collaboration in demoing the EV Sprinter truck during this event. 
 
The seminar drew approximately 90 participants.
