News: FIRST Lego League Championship in Germany

Tomorrow’s leaders in engineering are at work now, preparing to represent Canada from June 6 to 9, 2012 at the FIRST Lego League European Open Championship in Mannheim, Germany.

Every year, students from the SciTech regional program at Tomken Road Middle School, a unique blend of children from across Peel region with an aptitude for science and mathematics, research real-world problems, design and program robots and compete in a spirit of cooperation and sharing in the FIRST Lego League (FLL).

One of the SciTech teams, the Sci-Borgs, after competing at the regional and provincial level, have been afforded the opportunity and responsibility to be Canada’s representative in an Open Championship in Germany, which includes 70 student teams from 45 different countries.

FLL is a growing phenomenon that has captured the interest of over 16,000 teams worldwide. The theme this year is food safety. The Sci-Borgs decided to concentrate on the problem of controlling the spread of bacterial contamination. Through brainstorming, research and consultation with professionals in the food industry, the team hit upon a technological solution involving the use of ultraviolet (UV) light in restaurants and food production facilities.
