Two PEO Chapters Host Take Your MPP to Work Day At New Pearson Airport Baggage Facility

Deepak Anand, MPP (Mississauga-Malton) saw the work of professional engineers at a special viewing at a new automated state-of-the-art baggage system at Toronto Pearson Airport’s Terminal 3, which will help facilitate a smooth and efficient passenger experience at Toronto Pearson Airport’s Terminal 3, on May 31st. .

The event was arranged by two PEO Chapters – West Toronto and Mississauga – as part of the Take Your MPP to Work Day initiative. PCL Construction and the Greater Toronto Airport Authority (GTAA) were the host organizations, and also played a significant role in organizing the visit.

MPP Anand, who is one of two Parliamentary Assistants to the Minister of Finance, was chosen for this introduction as he is the local MPP for the airport area.

The GTAA tasked PCL Construction and Beumer Group – a logistical systems manufacturer –  with installing the system. Using robotics on a rail structure, the Early Baggage Storage (EBS) system holds bags for passengers until their plane has arrived, before recirculating them back for the departing flight.

With a capacity to hold up to 1,400 bags, the storage configuration was strategically designed and built based on baggage handling requirements for Terminal 3.

“We were pleased to share this project with MPP Anand,” said event host Erem Altunbulakli, P.Eng., PEO West Toronto Chapter GLP Rep and the PCL Project Manager for the baggage initiative. “It represents a crucial step in creating a next-generation Toronto Pearson Airport.”

Other participants included:

  • Jeannette Chau, P.Eng., PEO Mississauga Chapter GLP Chair
  • Mouwafak Ayoub, P.Eng., Chair of PEO Mississauga Chapter’s Environment, Energy & Transportation Committee
  • Nicole Tanel, PCL Special Projects Operations Lead
  • Chris Wilkinson, PCL Superintendent
  • Abhiraj Minhas, Special Assistant to MPP Anand

The Take Your MPP to Work Day initiative looks to showcase the work of professional engineers to MPPs and to highlight the role of PEO in the licensing and regulation of engineers working in the public interest. This enables MPPs to have a better understanding of PEO and the work of professional engineers.
